By '97 I had symptoms dang near as bad as the ruptured disc. They went in and "sucked out" the debris but DID NOT FUSE. Tractorlarry & bighagrid: Y'all certainly have me trumped. There were also cost-saving recommendations as well. Most of those decisions required spending more money (I think we used 5 LAM beams, which we hadn't planned on and are very expensive). Some decisions had to made as we went along, based upon recommendations from the GC AND the builder.

I was on site every day, but not every hour the workers were there. We had a total dollar amount for the construction loan, which we drew from to pay the bills each month, and only paid interest on what we drew off each month compounded from the start of the loan. Our bank construction loan converted automatically to a fixed-rate, 30-year mortgage, with only one closing charge. When we built our house, we went the route of hiring a GC by the hour and using vendors under our own credit, paying the invoices as they came in. Your homeowners insurance has a worker's comp rider to cover 3-4 workers, usually, which covers any worker in your home that you personally hire (housekeepers, handyman, etc.), but not the workers employed by the subs. Most of the time, if you get a loan to do the remodel, the bank or mortgage company will REQUIRE that you use a GC. I would need close to $ 1,000,000.00.I have wonderful memories as a child there, but sadly we moved away as my parents divorced and our finances changed dramatically. I've always said that if I ever had the money I would buy my old home. We also found my grandmother's house - a little cottage that I never knew about - and photographed it. Last time I visited home, a couple of my sisters and I visited old haunts and saw the renovation. BTW, my old elementary school, a few blocks away from the old house, is now a luxury condominium! The architects took it on as a restoration project. I told her I have that same photo.' She asked how? I told her about being able to find lots of home photos online. She and her daughter had visited the old neighborhood and took the photo, but did not try to visit. Even funnier, just last week, my sister sent me the exact photo that I found on Google street. I've planned to write the owner of the old house to ask about the ristra, but haven't gotten around to it. These are a tradition in the southwest where I now live! I started the gallery project about 6 months ago and hope to finish the it soon.

Funny thing about the photo I found: There is a chile ristra (ornamental hanging) on the front porch. I cannot get the very first one I lived in as an infant as it is now a highway. I don't know how our family fit in there! I am almost done with a gallery of pictures of all the homes I have lived in! The first home is the center piece. It is the same outside except for the color. I started searching online and found a picture of my old home on Google street. A year ago I purchased my first home, so I guess I was feeling a bit nostalgic. I have been back to see the home I grew up in once.
